This beautiful monarch butterfly is a female. She is busily laying eggs on the milkweed plants and feeding from the milkweed nectar. Monarchs lay eggs only on milkweed and feed primarily from milkweed.
The monarch butterfly (Danaus plexippus) is of the subfamily Danainae in the family Nymphalidae. They make a multi-thousand round trip migration north-south-north annually.
