This battery was constructed at Fort Stevens in 1904, situated on the Pacific coast near Cannon Beach, Oregon. It was considered a practice battery until WWII began in 1942. Of significance is that a Japanese sub fired on it from the Pacific Ocean in 1942, probably thinking it was a Navy sub base. The soldiers at Fort Stevens were instructed to hold their fire for the moment so as not to give away their position. Eventually, the Japanese lost interest and sailed away. Today it's a tourist attraction and a great place for photographs!
