Location
This was my first baby portrait session I have had. I took this photo in a friend's home whom is pictured here with her daughter. We stayed in the front yard and also inside in a dimly lit room.Time
We started shooting early around 10 or so and I didn't feel comfortable using only natural lighting, which is why I ended using a flash.Lighting
I really wanted to boost my portraits game, so beforehand I practiced shooting everything with my flash from cats, to selfies, even potpourri! I knew I wanted to just see the hands together in frame and to get everything else to appear black. I set my flash with a small softbox about 2 feet away at 45 degrees from my subject on a high power and reduced my shutter all the way to 1/320s. I still had to darken the background in post processing but if I had used a flash with ttl it could have been done in camera.Equipment
I used my Nikon D7000 paired with my nikkor 18-108mm F/3.5-5.6, Yongnuo 560 IV and receiver, Photoflex xsmall softbox.Inspiration
I wanted to show the scale of a baby compared to and adults hand. I knew that blacking out the background would give the portrait a more dramatic and classic look.Editing
I did indeed. I put this into Photoshop where I reduced blacks, boosted whites, and painted in the black vignette to completely disguise the background. In my camera bag
Everything! I have turned into a mule because I regret not having brought something along. For filters I use a Hoya HD Circular Polarizer, Hoya Pro 1 UV, and my favorite, the Hoya ND400 with a 9x stop of light. I carry my Nikon D7000 and D750 with my 35mm Nikkor F/1.8, a Nikkor 70-300mm F/4-5.6, my nikkor 18-108mm F/3.5-5.6, Yongnuo 560 IV and receiver, and lastly my cable release and my 3-Legged Thing Albert Equinox tripod.Feedback
I really enjoy filling a frame with my subjects when taking portraits. I find this really focuses on the individual(s) and makes you connect with them through a picture. It also helps to zoom in, which will cut out any distractions. Also adjust your aperture to blur your background. When you use a flash make sure to get as close to your subject without being in frame to achieve soft even lighting. Also remember to breathe and have fun shooting!
