Thanks John! It sure is. I live about 20 minutes away and this is one of the areas I work in. I love the area.

Behind The Lens

Location

This was taken at the historic Vista House in Corbett, Oregon along the Historic Highway Columbia River Highway. One of the most relaxing and awe-inspiring drives in North America.

Time

I took this photo at 9 a.m. in the winter of 2016.

Lighting

It was overcast with just a little bit of light shining down onto Vista House. I knew that with the overcast and clouds I could pull off a long exposure.

Equipment

I used a Nikon D7000 with the 18-105mm F3.5-5.6 lens sitting on top of the Albert Equinox by 3 Legged Thing. The most important part of getting this shot was using a 9 stop ND filter to cut the light, allowing for motion in the clouds and a 30 second exposure. I zoomed in to avoid a vignette which is funny because I added one later.

Inspiration

I thought that the house looked like this ancient monument with its stone work and something about it spoke to me. I was on my way home from photographing other parts of the gorge after a really heavy snow storm and found no one here which never happens. I figured, I'm in the area so why don't I go up and shoot?

Editing

Yes I did! I first converted to black and white and accentuated the contrast to really differentiate shadow from light. I added a vignette to the final image along with a gaussian blur to further show movement in the clouds. I used a mixture of Photoshop and Lightroom to achieve the end result.

In my camera bag

Everything! I have turned into a mule because I regret not having brought something along. For filters I use Breakthrough Photography filters including a polarizer and neutral density. I carry my Nikon D7000 and D750 (with grip) with my Tokina 16-28 F2.8, a Tamron 70-200mm F2.8,,Yongnuo 560 IV flash and receiver, and lastly my cable release and my 3-Legged Thing Albert Equinox tripod.

Feedback

Think of what all will move in your scene when pulling off a long exposure. Tree movement can be a nuisance and if you want to get it all in one shot choose your shutter speed wisely. I used the building because it was static and the clouds were not. Use a lot of contrast in your black and white photos to really make them pop. Don't completely lose shadow detail but go to your limit on how low you drop blacks and shadows.
