Behind The Lens

Location

I took the photo at the attic of my parents' house, where the cat is hiding most of the time. He dosn't like being bothered, so I used my 100mm macro lens on my APS-C camera for extra reach.

Time

That shot I took at noon I think.

Lighting

The sun was high and the light was coming from the roof window, which illuminates the room quite good. I tried to use my flash but the picture didn't look that good, the cat's face was very evenly lit by the flash and I turned it off so I got more drama in the picture because of the slight shadows.

Equipment

I shot this with a Canon 400d and a 100mm/f2.8L macro lens.

Inspiration

The cat you see in the picture is sort of evil and if you bother it too much you will get in trouble. His name is Sean and weighs about 7 kg, so he is quite large and intimidating. Only my mother is allowed to touch him and photographing him was not easy at all so I took the challange and here is the result.

Editing

I have added some contrast tho the photo and accentuated the eyes a bit.

In my camera bag

I have my Canon 6d for stills, I also have a 80d which I use as a second camera and for video. It has a great autofocus and the tilting touchscreen is very usefull. As for the lenses I have a 24-105mm/f4L not my favourite, but for a first lens it is quite good, 100mm/f2.8L macro - a great lens both for macro and for portraits, Sigma Art 35mm/f1.4 - rarely use any other lens since I got this one, and a 50mm/f1.8. I also have a 600EX-RT flash, batteries, memory cards, a remote trigger, I always have a torch with me, and some filters.

Feedback

Cats are hard to photograph so using a longer focal length will allow you to keep your distance and keep the animal calmer. I don't recommend using flashes as they may scare the cat and make it look unnatural.
