Nice shot. Someone tried taking a light painting photo of this ship and the burning embers caused a fire on the stern. I took a photo of this ship from about the same location and it has received over 600 peer awards (the same photo loaded twice -- my mistake). The ship is magic.

Location
This photo was taken in Inverness, California. This shipwreck has been there since last many many years and is very popular among the photographers.Time
I had visited this place few times before on way to Point Reyes, and always wanted to take a photograph of this beauty in a different and my own composition. Hence thought of a startrail. The Bay area weather is very notorious so to say .. the fog and clouds can roll in any time and ruin your plans. I had to wait for few months to get the right conditions - no moon and no clouds... Even then you see some clouds did roll-in in the end. This is a stack of 200 photographs taken over a period of 3 hours, starting at around 10 PM on 23rd Sept 2016.Lighting
I wanted to photograph this ship on a moonless night to get the maximum out of the stars, so lighting the ship was a challenge. I tried few options, but the best lightpainting was done with the flash light of my 1+ cell phone !!Equipment
I use a Canon 7d Mkii camera with a Rokinon 14mm lens mounted on a Vanguard Tripod and triggered using Newer Intervalvometer.Inspiration
This ship has been a photographers attraction since many years. I wanted to take a picture of this ship in a different composition, so thought of a star trail.Editing
Night photography definitely requires lot of post processing, especially the grains due to high ISO. However, since I had always planed for a startrail, I took these shots at low ISO of 320 and increasing the exposure time. So reducing the grains was a fairly easy task on this. Other than that, there were minimal color and exposure adjustment. In my camera bag
For night photography, I carry the camera, my Rokinon 14 mm lens, tripod, intervalvometer, remote, extra batteries and SD cards. Most importantly, I carry a camping head lamp and a military grade compass.Feedback
Bay Area is known for 'Karl' the fog and the clouds which can take over the best lighting conditions and spoil a photographers plan. Keeping an eye on the weather is very crucial. Carrying a head lamp always works. It does free-up your hands and allow you to best utilize them. In night photography, the biggest challenge is getting the composition right.Use all available light sources and tricks to first freeze on the composition, before proceeding to work on the camera settings.
