Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken about an hour north of Prince George BC, Canada, near Bear Lake. I was driving around with my little sister looking for a good spot and waiting for the northern lights to appear.

Time

I took this photo around 1am in March of 2014 with my little sister keeping me company. It was a super cold night, but we braved it to make sure I got a few awesome pictures. It was my second time out attempting astrophotography.

Lighting

Nothing specific with lighting in regards to this photo, I set my settings and let the camera do the rest.

Equipment

This was taken with a Nikon D7000, a Sigma 17-50mm F/2.8 lens and a tripod.

Inspiration

I absolutely love astrophotography and I had always wanted to try it. Living in Northern British Columbia means during the winter months the Aurora Borealis appears some nights. I went out this night to try and get some pictures of them.

Editing

I did a bit of post-processing. Adjusted highlights, shadows and the clarity, as well as a couple other things only to make the picture a bit more sharp.

In my camera bag

Normally in my bag I have my Nikon D7000, my three lenses, Rokinon 14mm, Sigma 15-30mm and my Sigma 18-250mm. Plus a few graduated filters, a tripod, lens cleaner, batteries, battery charger, and memory cards.

Feedback

If you want a picture similar to this, head where you might have a chance of seeing the northern lights. Fiddle with your manual settings and adjust the ISO high or low, change the shutter speed to around 20 seconds and the lowest f stop possible and go from there! Don't forget a tripod though!
