Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken at Uluru Kata Kjuta national park in Australia.

Time

It was the end of the day and the storm was coming. It is not permitted to saty in the park at night time and the wind just became so strong that it was hard to keep the tripod stable even at its lowest setting that was quite close to the ground.

Lighting

IT is very hard to capture lighting so I was leaving the shutter open several seconds at a time while keeping the aperture relatively close and a low ISO.

Equipment

Canon 6d, Canon 16-35mm f/2.8,cable release and a manfrotto tripod.

Inspiration

I knew that this was a kind of unique opportunity as not many tourist have the chance to see rain over the rock. Let alone the kinf of clouds that were covering Uluru. The night was coming and we had to leave the area, plus the 6d is not very weather sealed so I had to hurry up because the plastic bag that I carry for these kind of events was acting as a sail and the camera was not going to stay put for long.

Editing

There are 5 frames blended in this photo. One that I exposed for the rock and the cloud and 4 that were only lighting bolts. Because of the wind it was a bit of a process to work around the cloud because it was moving quite rapidly.

In my camera bag

I carry a pretty comprehensive kit.I have modified a carry on Samsonite rolling suitcase to be my "stealth" camera bag. In it I usually carry a 5d mk III and a 6d, a 50mm f/1.8 lens, 100mm L series f/2.8 macro, a sigma 85mm f/1.4 that I absolutely adore, my sigma 1.4x and 2x teleconverters, 16-35mm L f/2.8, 70-200mm IS f/2.8, 24-105mm L f/4, 2x 580ex speed lights, 90ex speed light, sekonic 758 light meter, Color checker passport, batteries, 5 phottix Atlas flash slaves, shutter release and intervalometer. Sometimes I may just grab a backpack and take a couple of things instead of the whole kit. These days I tend to carry more and more my Sony mirrorles and its lenses. In this opportunity I was only carrying the 6d, 16-35 and a 70-200. And my trusty Canon G9 powershot.

Feedback

Patience is the name of the game. Be assertive in your decisions, think quick but act calmly. Plan in your head before acting. Things like leaving the autofocus on, or an automatic mode could ruin your chances to create a composite. If time, weather and light are all against you, then you better have a game plan and stick to it.
