Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken on The Great Ridge, above the village of Castleton in Derbyshire, UK. It is a popular place for photographers but on that morning I was the only one there.

Time

Taken about an hour after sunrise, though I was there before sun up. The mist on the right was already there, but after a while the valley on the left slowly began to mist up too.

Lighting

The light was muted due to the patchy cloud, but just enough sunlight to illuminate the foreground.

Equipment

Canon 5D Mk 1, Canon 17-40L, Lee ND Grad filter and a Gitzo Tripod

Inspiration

I am often out in Derbyshire as Photography is my hobby, especially landscape. The weather report looked good for the morning and the very early rise proved well worth it.

Editing

Minimal processing in Lightroom, contrast, saturation and curves. Resized and sharpened in Photoshop.

In my camera bag

Now a Canon 6D( the photo above was taken last year), Canon 17-40L, Canon 24-105L and a Canon 100-400L

Feedback

Sunrise can be a long wait, followed by a quick burst of light. Patience, then ready to take quickly several compositions when the light appears. ALWAYS use a tripod! The Peak District has very changeable weather, so be prepared!
