I like the make-up, matching the model's dress. Since so much time and effort has obviously been spent on the make-up, it should be the centre of attention. You have framed the model's face with her hands and the flowers. However, I think the sunset (?) is a tad distracting so, if I were you, I would have cropped the top of the photograph.

Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken at Lake Louisa State Park, Clermont in the Sunshine state of Florida. I lived there for 5 years since I got married. It is still my "to go" place when I shoot. It's a 4k acre park which consist a lot of hiking locations, "two beaches" for hanging out and cabin and tent/RV area for camping :D This shoot was not planned at all. My friend, who is also a photographer, collaborated with me with this shoot and it turned out to be successful! I love it!I just wanted something colorful and rich images that I can add in my portfolio! I want people to see my inner personality just by looking at my art.

Time

This is my favorite photo so far in my high school senior category. I remember it was cold (for me) and we were busy getting the props together making sure we all have what we need and had to travel 30 minutes just to get to our location on time (before the park closes). I remember it was colder for me but then mosquitos were still brave to fly around and bit us during the shoot! lol...I always shoot 2 hours before sundown so this image was taken right about that time! It was the perfect time to capture my subject! Golden hour is always the best!!!!

Lighting

I wanted this image to look spooky but classy kinda thing. A sugar skull that is not scary at all yet it's sexy and pretty! Looking innocent kinda thing. This image was shot natural light, and one reflector in front. My aperture was low to create that beautiful bokeh in the background. As you can see, shooting low light requires your ISO to be higher so below was my setting for this image. :D Camera: Canon EOS 6D Aperture: f/2.8 ISO: 1000 Shutter Speed: 1/160 Focal Length: 100/1

Equipment

I had to use my friend's Canon 6D because she was using my 5D mark 111 which I didn't mind at all. I used a 100mm macro 2.8 on this shoot at 1/160 shutter speed to get the look that I wanted to achieve. No flash and no tripod. Just me, Mr. 6D, reflector and Ms. 100mm 2.8 macro. :D

Inspiration

For so long I wanted to do a halloween theme but just couldn't find anyone to do it with me. The subject was actually one of my model who i worked with for almost 4 years. Her and I decided to do something different that will speaks for our selfs.. I wanted an image that will speak to the audience that this photographer is trying to tell them something. As you can see the image that I created is somewhat like a calm, innocent, sensitive, delicate Skull but deadly when it's feelings is being abused - something like that! My model is actually loving the idea about it so her and I including my make up artist who is also a dear friend photographer of mine, decided to get together, shopping for props and designed the shoot. I love vibrant images. It speaks for my self. So as you can see, the sky is well lit up and the colors that we used for her make up is purple together with her bluish-darker tutu. The combination of the colors including the sunset and the green trees is perfectly inspired from a colorful images that i randomly found online!

Editing

Post-processing is where the art begins. You can never tell your self you're a professional if you don't know what's post-processing is meant. Before I started editing this image, I sat down and think to my self - what do i want to do with this image? - I simply answered my own question that I wanted something vibrant. Something rich and something colorful that pops! I started to take care of the skin first, then the whole subject then proceeded to the minor fixings of the backgrounds such as unwanted plants or trees that bugs me and little details that I thought i needed to fix. Believed me or not, this image is composed of three images. I liked the pose of this one, but then the face was out of focus, so i borrowed her head from the other image. I also borrowed some trees from other images to make it look perfect! The sunset was not actually there :) The actual sun was covered with clouds at the time of shoot so the only thing I had was the reflector and had to up my ISO to 1000 to get the lighting i want. This sunset was purchased from Jake Olson, one of the best photo editor in the planet. I also added a vignette to make the subject pop!

In my camera bag

I owned an evermore from thehouseofflynn.com and i tell you these camera bags is perfect for your gears! I owned a 5D Mark 3, a 1D Mark 3, a 35mm 1.4 sigma art and a 70-200 2.8 sigma APO. These are my babies!!!! I cannot live without these equipment! I also carry a squeaker since I shoot a lot of kids. It will help me get their attention for a short period of time (as all we know, kids are unpredictable, sometimes they're looking at you in a second, the next second will be looking somewhere else. This is why being proficient in photoshop is a must no matter what kind of department you are in photography industry!) I always have my lens wiper with me because I shoot a lot of beach sessions and it's important for me to keep my lens clean and of course a brush to keep my dslr body clean all the time. I always have an extra battery with me ALL. THE. TIME. You never know when what's gonna happen. I always have a spare just en case, you're not gonna let your self down if tough times happen.

Feedback

When you're in Florida, you have to expect that our weather is weird! Yes! WEIRD! 5 minutes later its raining hard, then minutes later it's sunshine! Never trust the weather forecast neither lol...Anyway, what I'm trying to say is Florida is very hot and muggy so when you decide to shoot at low light, make sure you choose the day that it's not too hot even though if it's 6pm at night, we can still have a 100 degree temperature and it won't be fun for your client. Always make sure you have a back up plan like bringing a fan that you can use for your clients. Second is BUG SPRAY! You have no idea how i hate mosquitos. lol. It is always a good idea to keep bug spray in hand just en case your client is allergic to mosquito bites, you have something for them to keep them comfortable. Third is choose a good make up artist. You have to search the best one! If your make up artist doesn't met your requirements, it is better to keep looking. You might be disappointed after all the hard work and ended up not liking the finish result. Fourth, choosing a location is very crucial. Make sure the client is not sitting in an ant hill or worst case, in cactuses. This location that we use was full of cactus and we had to find a perfect spot where cactuses were not present. Always make sure that client is safe before you start your shoot. Fifth, always look at your camera's screen. Shoot and look! Shoot the subject and look at your screen to make sure you like what you captured. Also this will prevent from making mistakes like "Oh crap! i didn't have my card on!" (this will happen if you enabled the mode where you can still shoot without a memory card inserted in the body). Sixth, always tell your clients that they're doing a good job in posing. Educate them as much as you can. This way you are building a relationship and confidence between you and your subject. In my opinion, showing your client the "behind the camera" images can make them more excited! So why not start doing it? :D
