Photos of Crater Lake under the stars barely do the real view justice. I've never seen more stars in my life! I'm jealous this fallen tree gets to see this view every night. This is a blend between two exposures. One for the stars at about 30 seconds, and another for the foreground for 30 seconds with some light painting from my iPhone.

Behind The Lens

Location

This image was taken on the west end of Crater Lake National Park in Southern Oregon.

Time

I believe this was taken around 10pm give or take.

Lighting

This is a composite of two exporsures. One is for the stars which was a 30 second exposure, and another for the foreground that I used my iphone to paint some light across the fallen tree.

Equipment

I use a manfrotto tripod, Canon 5D mkiii, Canon 16-35mm (at 16mm), and an iPhone.

Inspiration

Photos of Crater Lake under the stars barely do the real view justice. I wanted to try and capture the exact image I was seeing that night. I got close, but the real thing doesn't even compare

Editing

I did quite a lot of post-processing. I blended the two exposures to get a greater dynamic range. I used multiple layers on the stars using a soft light blend to bring the stars out and darken the sky.

In my camera bag

I normally keep two Canon 5D mkiii's along with Canon L glass. I like to keep two intervalometers for time-lapses or long exposures. Plenty of batteries and media!

Feedback

I'm a big believer of composition. When I show up to a location, scout out your subject matter. Even if it's a landscape, your image should have characters and tell a story. Set up a scene and capture it the way your eye wants to see it.
