Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken at Lighthouse Beach, Port Macquarie, Australia when I first started photography 2 years ago. It is definitely the best storm photo I have ever taken and I have photographed quite a few since that day.

Time

From the warm night you could feel there was going to be a storm in the afternoon. I made sure my camera bag was ready to go in the morning incase storms were to arrive. It was well over 30 degrees by lunchtime, I could see some clouds off in the distance and thought I would check the radar on my phone. I could see storms were starting to fire up over the ranges which would take 2-3 hours to get to the coast. 30 mins later I could see the storms were getting bigger and more frequent on my phone, I made the decision to head to my favourite spot for a photo. I actually arrived an hour early to get set up and waited patiently for it to arrive. When it arrived at roughly 2 o'clock I was blown away by the shear size and structure of it as you can see in the photo.

Lighting

Well there's not a lot I can say about the light except when the cloud came over it started to get dark quickly just before it poured down with rain. The sun was behind that mountain in the distance on the right of that photo hence why it is warmer in that part of the photo. I could still see blue skies out over the ocean just before this front arrived.

Equipment

This was shot with my first camera, Canon 60D with my second lens Canon 10-22mm at 10mm sitting on a 190 xb Manfrotto tripod. I also used a Lee Hard .9 gradual density filter for the sky and a remote so I could take rapid shots without worrying about moving the tripod. My settings were f8 1/6 Iso100.

Inspiration

Easy, It's Mother Nature. Capturing that moment Mother Nature throws at us is just what I love to do. It will be different everytime. Simple as that.

Editing

This is a natural edit with no heavy processing. All adjustments were done globally in camera raw and this is very close to how it looked on the back of my camera.

In my camera bag

What I've learnt over the years is that it doesn't matter what you have in your bag, it's about how you can maximise what equipment you already have. A camera doesn't know how to tell a story, that's up to the photographer and when you realise that it doesn't matter what equipment you have. In my bag currently is a Canon 6D a Canon 16-35mm f4 lens and still only have the 1 lee filter as mentioned earlier and that's all i need.

Feedback

I found being patient and being well prepared for what ever it is you want to photograph. Getting in the right position so you frame your shot perfectly makes a good photo stand out from the rest. Composition is probably the most important part of photography and then just let mother nature do the rest.
