This photo was taken in my neighborhood. Whenever it snows, which isn't often, I always try to get photos of how different the area looks.Time
This was around 4 in the afternoon, when the snow clouds and the encroaching night made the lamplight stand out even more.Lighting
I didn't color correct for the blue-ness of the snowy day, because I wanted the contrast between that and the yellow light from the lamppost.Equipment
This photo was taken with a Sony Alpha 330, 39 mm at f/4.4 shutter 1/200 ISO 125, handheld.Inspiration
We love the Chronicles of Narnia, and when it does snow in our area, my kids always talk about how the lampposts in our neighborhood remind them of the one in the story. I have been trying to get a good "Narnia photo" ever since they first said it.Editing
I cropped the original image a bit, and lightened the shadows. In my camera bag
I carry a Sony 18-55 lens and a 55-200 lens everywhere. Usually I pack a compact or tabletop tripod. I may or may not bother with a flash, since I don't like the light of a flash, but sometimes you need it and you can bounce it around too. Oh, and extra batteries for everything!Feedback
If you have an idea in your head, don't give up on it. Don't settle for a photo that's "close enough." Keep trying, keep looking for the right composition and the right combination. Eventually you'll get one that looks like you want.
