Behind The Lens

Location

This is my home in Olive Branch, Mississippi.

Time

It was taken at around 7 pm.

Lighting

I wanted it dark enough that the Christmas lights would provide most of the illumination, but not so dark that there would be no delineation between the roof and the sky behind.

Equipment

Sony Alpha 330 with 18-55 lens and a tripod.

Inspiration

We had added some elements to the Christmas lights this year, and I really was just intending to record how the house looked. I was pleased at how it turned out.

Editing

I lightened up the shadows a bit, to make sure the difference between the roof and the sky would show.

In my camera bag

I usually carry one body and two lenses, 18-55 and 55-200. I sometimes carry a Precision flash.

Feedback

Be willing to mess around a fair bit in post, to hit the right balance of light and dark. You don't want the lights to be overexposed, like the wreath lights on the porch are, and you don't want the shape of the house underexposed. If I were shooting this again, I might shoot several different exposures and see how they looked edited together in HDR.
