Behind The Lens

Location

I took this photo in a make shift home studio. With a light umbrella reflector that I made from cardboard and covered with foil. I used and external flash and put it inside the umbrella. I was learning how to do an invisible backdrop. I at the time had never done this technique and was eager to try it but got sick of waiting fro equipment I had ordered to arrive so I improvised.

Time

This was taken in an indoor studio in the afternoon.

Lighting

I used basic overhead room lighting along with a synchronized flash (Yonguo YN - 560 111 with a Yonguo transmitter) in a home made umbrella.

Equipment

The camera was a canon EOS 550d, f5.6, 1/250 sec, ISO 200 and focal length on lens was 85mm. I used a canon 24 - 105 lens. The external flash I used was a Yonguo YN - 560 111 with a Yonguo transmitter.

Inspiration

As it was the first doing this technique I wanted to try it with a subject matter that didn't move, to create a still life. I love Jack Skellington so it was only fitting to use figure that I like as it gave more of a reason to want to get the image the right.

Editing

I did do some post - editing in Photoshop CC. I used 2 of the pre-set's and they were auto tone and auto contrast. That was it, I wanted to keep it as simple and unchanged as possible.

In my camera bag

I still have the Canon 550d camera body but I also have a Canon 5d Mark 111. In lenses I have the Canon 50mm 1.8 Prime Lens, Canon 70 - 200mm f2.8, Canon 24 - 105 f4, Canon 400mm f5.6. These are my basic lenses in my big bag that I take ever where that way I am fully prepared all the time. Depending on where or what we are doing a take a smaller bag that I can carry with more ease and have better access to my camera with. With this I usually take a small shoulder bag with me that I put my 2 lenses I use the most in with the 5d Mark 111 and that's the 70 - 200 and the 24 - 105 that way they are in easy reach all the time. Which ever bag I have with me also take spare batteries and a external flash (Yonguo YN - 560 111).

Feedback

It doesn't matter what equipment you have you can give anything a go. With a bit of creativity you can achieve the same look with make shift equipment, if you cant afford the real deal. I do suggest that if your doing this type of shoot with a client you should invest in the right equipment so you be professional. Remember to have fun and don't get to bogged down with being so precise on everything as you may miss that perfect shot and not capture the look you are after. Oh and one more thing Practice, Practice, Practice.
