Behind The Lens

Location

This image was taken at the Brienz West Bahnhoff station in Switzerland, which is just east of Interlaken on the train route.

Time

It was late afternoon about 7:00 PM and we were on our way back to hour hotel in Meiringen, Switzerland.

Lighting

Lighting was tough, a little to light in the top of the image with light from the clouds, but the white wall of the church did help a bit. But the rest of the image was dark and I would need a slow shutter but did not have my tripod with me.

Equipment

I used a Canon 5D MkII with Cano EF24-105 mm f/4 L IS USM lens.

Inspiration

We had been traveling back and forth past this point for several days by train and I had been trying to capture this scene from the moving train. This was going to be one of our last chances so I decided to get off and catch a later train from the main station of this village to the village we were staying in. Unfortunately, it started raining shortly after getting off the train. I did like the affect of the wet pavement but had to keep covering my lens to keep rain spots off of it. I really liked the way the road lead the eye into the village to the church and then past to the mountains and waterfall.

Editing

I had to push back the highlights and bring out the shadows using both Shadows & Highlight tools in Lightroom as well as adjusting the Blacks and Whites.

In my camera bag

For this trip I knew we would be doing a lot of walking so I only had my 5DMKII with a 24-105mm f4.0, along with a 16-35 f/2.8 wide angle lens. I also had some filters such as polarizing and a couple of graduated ND filters.

Feedback

Be better prepared than I was. If you think you will be out in similar lighting conditions carry a small travel tripod I was luck to be able to prop my camera on a fence post for stability. If you see something interesting and cannot stop think about going back or plan a way to get it another time. I felt it was worth the stop and glad I made the time.
