Its monsoon in India and these birds are preparing to pair off and mate. It's not an easy job. The peahens need a lot of cajoling. So,the peacocks compete with each other in displaying their magnificent feathers to entice them. This happens just before the rains set in. Once the rains begin, the long feathers become wet and heavy, preventing the birds from running and flying making them easy prey for the predators. That's when those beautiful feathers are shed. By next spring, they have a new set of fresh glossy feathers and the whole cycle repeats itself.
