Behind The Lens

Location

This pumpkin patch was taken in the fall of 2014 in Kenosha, Wisconsin.

Time

It was early morning, shortly after sunrise as the clouds rolled in off of Lake Michigan. I took hundreds of exposures to find this one where the clouds seem to form a scary Halloween black cat face. I did not see this matrixing at the time.

Lighting

The lighting was dark and foreboding, softly spilling onto to the tops of the pumpkins and tangled vines. Perfect for a Halloween shot.

Equipment

I use my one and only digital slr, the Canon 7d with a Canon 10-22mm.

Inspiration

It was getting close to Halloween and once again I was in search of the perfect pumpkin patch before they were all harvested. Finding both the right place with the right sky is easier said than done.

Editing

I shoot my series Horizons in HDR so it is merged in Adobe Photoshop. I try to make sure the image is balanced in light and tone by adjusting contrast and dodging/burning.

In my camera bag

I have a pelican case that I keep my camera in. I always have an extra digital card, two extra batteries and a lens cleaning cloth. I try to keep it simple so when I need to move I can do it quickly.

Feedback

I have shot hundreds of thousands of bracketed images over the last four and a half years to get about 1,200 Horizons. My goal is to always try and get one good shot a day. Seems easy? I can honeslty say after shooting photography for the better part of 35 years it is getting a little easier now that I know what I am looking for. Trial and error, taking tons of lousy shots, is the best way to learn. Then not being afraid to post them live so thousands upon thousands of people worldwide can tell you what they think. The trick here is to not be offended but to listen and learn.
