Behind The Lens

Location

I took this shot on Fort Walton Beach, Florida (The National Sea Shore)

Time

Shot early morning.

Lighting

Get to the beach a little before sunrise and set up. By 10am you are usually finished. I usually just sit and wait for Gods little surprises.

Equipment

Canon 1DX with a canon 500mm 4.0 II lens on a ground pod. I sit camera and lens on a plastic frisby and scoot along the sand laying on my tummy.

Inspiration

I love wildlife and shore birds. Living in Florida its so easy to find wonderful subjects and the beaches in the panhandle and amazing. White sand and aqua water.

Editing

I use photoshop CS5 and bridge to process all my RAW images.

In my camera bag

Equipment includes: Canon 1DX Canon 1D Mark IV Lens: Canon 500 mm 4.0 prime L IS II Canon 70-200 mm 2.8 L IS II Canon 50mm 1.2 L Canon 24-70 mm 2.8 L II Canon 100 mm macro 2.8 L IS II Canon 16-35 mm wide angle 2.8 L II Canon 1x4 extender III Canon 1x2 extender III Canon 600 RT Speedlite (rogue softbox kit) Really Right Stuff tripod with Really Right Stuff camera plates and ball heads. 4th generation 3.6 gimble panning head for wildlife Induro Tripod for lighter work. Monostat monopod I travel frequently and use all THINK TANK camera bags and all my lens are covered with lens coats. I use LACIE rugged external hard drives for backup of all my images when traveling.

Feedback

When shooting shore birds one needs patience. I sit for hours to gain their trust and let them come to me. I use a sand cart to carry all my gear and pack a snack and water. There is nothing like a peaceful sunrise on a white sandy beach with crystal blue waters and wildlife. Try it you will like it.
