Location
I took this photo in Boston, MA. It was hard to get to this exact spot near Paul Revere Park. It was absolutely freezing in December, but I stuck it out!Time
It was just after sunset in December. It was so cold, but I always wanted to photograph this bridge so I stuck it out! I wanted the buildings to be lit up but also wanted the sky to have color to it as opposed to having a dark black night sky!Lighting
I like shooting in the blue hour just after sunset. You still have atmospheric lighting, but buildings are also lit up!Equipment
I used a Canon EOS 6D and a EF28-70mm f/2.8L USM lens. I didn't have a tripod with me, so I used sticks stuck into a chain link fence to balance the camera while I took the shot with a low shutter speed.Inspiration
I have always seen the Zakim bridge lit up as I pass it on my way north of Boston. It was always on my bucket list to photograph it lit up. I ended up taking a trip to Boston for Christmas, so I took advantage of my location and made sure I was able to cross this one off the bucket list!Editing
I do minimal post-processing. I convert to SRGB color space for the web, and do basic color correction. The lens flare in the middle of the photo is actually a street lamp. It looks the way it does because of a long shutter speed! In my camera bag
I absolutely love my Canon EOS 6D. The quality of images it produces is fantastic, and it is easy for me to shoot in manual mode. My Canon 50mm portrait lens is also a favorite. The depth of field I get from the lens makes my photographs look beautiful. I also carry a Sigma 28-77mm, a Sigma 70-300mm Macro Super and a Tokina 19-35mm. I also carry an attachable flash, but I don't use it very often because I love working with natural light. Although not in my main bag, I also have a Canon EOS ELAN film camera and a Canon AE-1 Film camera with various lenses. I love shooting with them and processing film in a dark room every once in a while. It really makes you appreciate technology today!Feedback
Be yourself, and don't be afraid to try unique techniques. Use nature to your advantage and create unique vantage points by not always using a tripod.
