Behind The Lens

Location

Natural Bridges State Beach is a California state park in Santa Cruz, California, in the United States. The park features a natural bridge across a section of the beach. It is also well known as a hotspot to see monarch butterfly migrations.

Time

One of my favorite times is sunset, the golden hour. The timing of this image was after the sun had set below the horizon – the blue hour – its beautiful colors and ethereal light casting onto the side of this iconic Natural Bridge rock. Shooting quickly while the wave constantly pushed up and receded onto the beach.

Lighting

Sunset doesn’t just create wonderful colors in the sky; it also cast a beautiful golden light that is great for other types of photography! In the light of the setting sun, it’ll all turn out amazing!

Equipment

Nikon 750, 35-70 Nikon D Push-pull type zoom, tripod. The 35-70 Nikon lens is my favorite lens. I've used this lens for just about everything....landscape, fine art, and commercial shoots.

Inspiration

There are many photo spots locally here in California, especially along the coast. Natural Bridges – This beach, with its famous natural bridge, is an excellent vantage point for viewing shore birds, migrating whales, and seals and otters playing offshore. I will come back to see monarch butterfly migrations - November to early December the monarch will migrate out of the area by mid to late January.

Editing

Simple processing of any photo. Always shoot in RAW mode and process the image via Bridge. The final touch is in Photoshop with Nik Collection DxO Photoshop plugin

In my camera bag

A full-frame camera. A few lenses 35-70, 70-200 (rarely use but always carry it), a tripod.

Feedback

Sometimes (actually most of the time) I take many pictures with many point-of-view. Especially on the beach at sunset. This just increases the chance to have a "perfect" picture. There are times I will combine and composite a few photos to get a final shot, a pelican(s), a nice brake of the wave, etc.
