Red clover thrives in a wide range of grassland types. The species occurs on all kinds of moderately nutrient-poor to nutrient-rich soil types, from dry to fairly wet and from moderately acidic to alkaline. Only the poorest, most acidic soils are less suitable. However, in most quarter pens there are sufficient anthropogenically enriched places, so that red clover is still found even in the most nutrient-poor areas. It was once an important agricultural crop, but its importance has declined sharply.
