Carpathian mountains, Romania. The path down from Caraiman (2384m) to Busteni.

Saturday in Bucuresti on a business trip with nothing to do in town. So took an early train to Sinaia, then the cable car up to 2000m and set off on a 15km hike. The mountain scenery is stunning and I was surprised how many people were up there. I only had rough terrain running shoes with me but was better equipped for the conditions than many I saw. The weather was still good but this was probably the last summery weekend of the year. There was warm sunshine most of the way but clouds were funnelling up the east side of the slopes and the summit was lost in cloud. Everything went well until it came to the descent. I had planned to come down a track beneath another cable car that runs down to the next town of Busteni, but hadn’t realised how difficult it was going to be. It dropped relentlessly from 2300m to 900m on steep rock and loose earth. There were frequent sections with fixed ropes and it took me 4 hours to get down. Very hard on the legs, and I noticed the change in altitude as well. Fab day out!
