After an early start in our morning drive we chanced upon this cheetah around seven o’clock in the morning.Lighting
At this early hour the sun was still quite low which gave nice side lighting.Equipment
The photo was taken on my Sony Alpha 7 mk3. I was using my Sony Alpha FE 200-600mm F5.6-6.3 G OSS lens. I supported the camera on a cushion placed on the side of the vehicle for stability and to reduce camera shake.Inspiration
It was an easy decision to make as the cheetah was quite close to the vehicle and had turned its head to look at us.Editing
I added additional blur to the background in Lightroom. I defined the cheetah whilst bringing down the background to make the cheetah stand out.In my camera bag
When I’m out taking photographs at home I only have my camera and one lens plus a lens cloth. I also carry spare batteries and a polarising filter. When I was in Tanzania I had several lenses and a 1.3 multiplier. Plus waterproof covering for the camera and lens which also prevented dust from entering the camera or lens. The lens I used for this shot is better protected against water or dust because the focusing mechanism is internal.Feedback
Set up your camera on aperture priority using the lowest setting around f5.6 and a manual iso that results in a shutter speed higher than the focal length length of the lens you are using. Use a mono tripod or support it as I did with a cushion on the window frame or side of the vehicle.
