Behind The Lens

Location

The photo was taken at the Western Pleasure Guest Ranch inside their arena with natural light during a week long photography workshop lead by Tony Stromberg.

Time

The photo was taken in the morning. The family who owns and runs the ranch provide several different opportunities to photograph a variety of horse breeds and colors. This one was taken in their arena as the horses circled one of the ranch hands.

Lighting

I wanted the low light to provide a low key photo to capture the horses movement. The sand "spray", flying mane and position of the horse caught the light just right to achieve the motion and grace of a moving horse.

Equipment

Natural light was used with the Nikon D850 and Nikon lens 70.0-200.0 mm F/2.8. The focal length wss 112.00 mm (in 35mm: 112mm) exposed at: 1/800 sec; f/4.0; ISO 800; Manual; Pattern metering

Inspiration

I've loved horses since I was a child and jumped at the opportunity to take low key photos them. The low lighting brought out the beautiful lines and motion of this horse and the black and gold coloring enhanced the moment. It was a take your breath away ... be still my heart moment.

Editing

I used both light room and photoshop to enhance the highlights, increase the golden color and further darken the background.

In my camera bag

For equine photography I usually carry two Nikon D850's. One with a long lens Nikon 200-500 f/5.6 and a shorter lens Nikon 70-200 mm f/2.8. This allows me to photograph wild or domestic horses close and far both in and out of their environment.

Feedback

Look how famous painters painted light. Ask yourself what it is you like about the lighting in the painting. Do the same for photography. Know your subject's behavior and environment then ask yourself how the lighting you like or want to emulate can be achieved with the equipment you have. Bottom line, never give up trying to achieve your goal but beware of doing the same thing over and over and expecting different results... commit and learn from your experiences.
