The photo was taken in the U.S. state of Arizona on the banks of the Salt River in the Tonto National Forest.Time
The photo was taken early in the morning as the sun was coming up. It was cold enough out to see both your breath and the mustangs.Lighting
The photo is backlit. The mustangs sparred as the sun rose behind them creating a silhouette effect.Equipment
I used a Nikon D610 with a Nikon 18-300 lens on a tripod. Settings: 1/2500 sec; f/5.6; ISO 800Inspiration
Nothing better in life for me than "Walking With the Mustangs!" I've embarked on a journey to photograph the Mustangs throughout the U.S. in the next 5 years. Photographing the Salt River Mustangs in the Tonto National Forest is my 1st stop.Editing
I used Lightroom and Adobe photoshop to increase the highlights which enhanced the sparring action for the viewer.In my camera bag
I normally have the Nikon long telephoto (200-500), 18-300, and a macro lens. Additional equipment I have with me are a tripod, water to stay hydrated, phone for emergency's, and cloth wipes specific for cleaning lenses.Feedback
Know your subject and be prepared. Wildlife action can occur on the spur of a nanosecond so have your settings ready! Golden light is always special in the early morning or late evening light. Research where you are going and what you are going for.
