My wife and I went to have Lunch at this famous restaurant of pizza and pasta in Houston. We asked for Gnocchi Pompei which is one of their best meals they have and ate them Argentinian style. How is that? We put some money under the plate, it can be seen in the photo. This is a tradition in Argentina that has at least two version of its origin: The first version of the tradition focuses merely on socio-economic issues. According to it, the custom would have begun with Italian immigrants who, as near the end of the month had less money available to support themselves, chose to prepare gnocchi at that time because it was a cheap dish. With the times what happened is that those from the wealthiest sectors invited their compatriots to enjoy a meal and left them money under the plate as a help. From there, both habits spread and joined to form a relationship that today seems unbreakable.
The other version which is the most widespread and has a history that goes much further back in time. The protagonist of the story is a young man named Saint Pantaleon, a Christian martyr who preached and healed the sick. On the 29th, he was in the Veneto region of northeastern Italy when he received an invitation to eat from a family of fishermen. They served him gnocchi. As a thank you gesture, San Pantaleón predicted that they would have a great year in terms of fishing. This was a surprise, given that so far, the year was very bad for the activity. In addition, they noticed that the pilgrim had left some gold coins under his plate when he left.
You are to believe one of the two versions or whatever other is told to you when you visit Argentina and ask for Gnocchis. But do not forget to put money under the plate it is supposed to bring luck and prosperity.
