A hutong is a cross between an alley and a street. It's typically narrow with low-rise buildings that may be residential or have small shops (or both). They represent Beijing before the Western chains and high rises arrived, so exploring them is (for me) much more interesting than checking out the modern shopping malls with the usual collection of luxury chains. This one is close to the Bell Tower and the Drum Tower, not far from Beihai Park.
