In 1715, Margrave Karl Wilhelm von Baden-Durlach founded the castle and town of "Carols Ruh" in the middle of the Hardtwald. The city of Karlsruhe has become famous for its fan-shaped floor plan starting from the castle:
32 axes radiate from the central castle tower, which are intersected by a compass. For almost 200 years, the Karlsruhe Palace served as the residence and seat of government of the Margraves, and later the Grand Dukes of Baden. In November 1918, the last reigning Grand Duke Friedrich II fled from the revolutionary Baden troops. As a result, the Karlsruhe Palace lost its function as a residence. The castle has been the seat of the Baden State Museum since 1919.
Today, the Karlsruhe Palace in the center of the fan-shaped city is both a landmark and a hotspot.
