The castle was first mentioned in documents in 1307. After conversions in the Middle Ages and in the Baroque period, today's palace and gardens date back to the late
19th century. Beginning in 1854, the Cologne cathedral master builder Ernst Friedrich Zwirner redesigned the exterior of the palace in the neo-Gothic style. Until 1945 it served as the permanent residence of the von Steengracht family and was a popular destination for travelers on the Lower Rhine. After being destroyed in the war and falling into disrepair, the building remained a ruin for decades. From 1987 restorations were carried out.
