Location
I took this shot at Quicksilver miniature horse ranch in Solvang CA. The Santa Ynez Valley has long been the horse breeder’s Kentucky of the west. Some of the finest thoroughbred horses (as well as miniature) come from this area.Time
I took this photo on a bright sunny day, around 10:30 AM. I did not have my tripod with me, therefore I used one of the wooden fence post on the outskirts of the pasture to balance my camera during the photo shoot.Lighting
Due to the bright sunshine, light color of the horse, as well as the time of day, I utilized a circular polarizer filter. The design reduces internal lens reflections and flare.Equipment
This was shot with a Sony 6100 Mirrorless camera with an E 55-210 mm lense.Inspiration
What inspired me to take the photo were the multi-colors of the miniature horse as well as the bright green landscape in the horse pasture. In addition, I love to take animal photo’s.Editing
I did do some post processing. The photo was originally shot in color. Being that the photo contest that I entered required a black and white photo, I converted the color photo using grayscale using Luminar Neo photo editing tools. In my camera bag
I usually pack my Sony Alpha 6100 Mirrorless camera with my E PZ 16-50mm lense, the E 55-210mm lense, as well as my FE 85mm f/1.8 Telephoto Prime Lense. I also pack my filters, tripod, and spare memory cards for photo storage.Feedback
I currently consider myself an amateur photographer. The best advice that I have always been told is to enjoy your time with your camera. Explore the world around you. Remember that the mistakes you make are being made by nearly everyone in your situation. You aren’t alone. When I first took this photo I thought that the picture was overexposed due to the sunlight and I almost deleted the picture in my camera. However I waited to checkout the photo at home once I downloaded the photo to my computer. Once I did look at the photo on my PC I realized that by converting my photo from color to Black and white (at least in my case) turned the photo into a little gem!
