Location
In France the 14th of July is celebrated with big fireworks. We decided to go to the one in Ambois, which turned out to be a good choice. It was one of the best fireworks I had ever seen. Standing on the higher bank of the Loire river we had a great view.Time
The show started at the end of the evening, at sun set, the blue hour. This, of course, to get a better visibility of the fireworks. While the show was busy, it got slowly darker changing the intensity of the light and the color if the sky. Going through all shaed of blue intil it was completely black.Lighting
Fireworks are an easy subject. You want light trails so you have to manage you shutter speed. That also measn shooting in manual mode. A shutterspeed of 3 to 5 seconds will do. Make sure you focus manually on infinity, otherwise the fireworks might not be in focus and you don't want to come home with blurry light trails.Equipment
Obviously, with the shutter times above, one needs a tripod. I used wide angel lense as I expected the fireworks to be big and high in the sky. I did not want a close up, I wanted get some landscape in frame for sizing. It better to crop in post processing if needed.Inspiration
Fireworks is a beautiful subject and Bastille Day is know for the big shows. So I had to go and bring my camera, I wanted to capture that event. From there on it was just enjoying the show and press the button at the right time, check your shots every now and then, adjusting the position or zoom.Editing
For post processing I cropped the image to get a better composition. Played with the darks and highlights, vibrance and saturation to make colours stand out. The geen and the blue blend well and the reflection of the water completedthe picture so I did not van to do much about it. All was done in Lightroom. In my camera bag
I always have two lenses with me a wide angel 17-28 and s mid range 28-70 Tamron. Depending the occasion I bring tripod along and I always have an ND filter in my bag and spare batteries. With these longer exposures, it will drain fast.Feedback
Be prepared e.g. arrive in time as it will be crowded and you want a good spot. Clear sight is key. Make sure you have enough space so the don't bump into you will you are exposing. Make some foto's before the fireworks start so see if your focus is correct and when it starts, don't forget to enjoy the show.
