Two flowers from the front garden, a yellow and white iris, the only color out of several planted years ago to fully naturalize, and a jungle cactus, Epiphyllum Pegasus whose dark pink petals have a cherry center.
May is the month for most of the Epiphyllums to show off, though it's not really a public showing. I grow them in pots on the retaining wall that runs along the length of the garden bed, and from the sidewalk viewers see the plants in front, the roses, potted ornamental grasses, flowering quince, daylilies, Four 0' clocks, Gaura, seasonal bulbs, and yes, the irises in front of them. If a person takes the time after sniffing the roses and looking at the main garden and then keeps looking, then they might be discovered. With the garden receiving full sun, they benefit from the dappled shade of the plants in front of them. It's funny, even my nearest neighbors are sometimes surprised in the morning when they see me carrying a few of these, freshly cut, to photograph. The cactus garden is no longer private to those in the know.
