Hornets are fond of sweets, but visit few or no flowers. They do, however, slurp the juice from fallen fruit or from injured, 'bleeding' trees. In addition, they intensively prey on all kinds of insects such as flies, mosquitoes and wasps. They stun their catch with the venom from their sting. European hornets are the only species of wasp that also hunt at night, for example on moths.
