This happened a few years ago.
It was night when I heard a cry and went out to check. Something fell from a tree in front of me. It was a common king snake (Lampropeltis getula) clinging to the neck of a Gila woodpecker (Melanerpes uropygialis), it was strangling him.
I ran to get the camera and took this picture.
It took about 40 minutes for the snake to strangle and swallow the bird to shoulder height.
Reaching the wings, which were open, he realized that he could no longer continue. It regurgitated the prey and left, leaving it behind.
