Behind The Lens

Location

It was taken at Witbank Dam, Mpumalanga, South Africa during a cold and foggy winter's morning during a fishing competition. The dam is one of the highest dams above sea level (more than 5000 feet) in the country and therefore prone to fog in winter.

Time

It was early morning just after sunrise, although the fog hid the sun!

Lighting

The fog and rising sun created the perfect soft lighting and purple hue.

Equipment

The camera was a Nikon D3000 with a Nikkor 18-55 mm lens and it was hand held. The settings were: f 6.3, exposure 1/320 sec, ISO 100 and focal length 29 mm. I always have this camera at hand on the boat whenever we go fishing!

Inspiration

The peaceful atmosphere and soft light inspired me.

Editing

I used Photoshop Elements 11 to improve the lighting slighly and improve the colour.

In my camera bag

Nikon D3000 and D3100 bodies with the following lenses: Sigma 10-20mm, Nikkor 18-55 mm, Tamron 70-300 mm, Nikon 105 mm micro, and Sigma 150-500 mm lens in its carry case for birds.

Feedback

Use every opportunity to take a picture, because nature creates beautiful scenes whenever you least expect it.
