Thank you Joop! My grandson and my daughter’s ‘heart’ horse. He is 27 now and pretty much retired. Several other’s are picking up the huge hole that needed filled.

Behind The Lens

Location

I took this photo of my grandson and my daughter's 'heart' horse in the aisleway at the door of our barn.

Time

This photo was taken in the late morning. Nothing spectacular about the light other than it was lighter outside then in the shadowed aisleway of our barn. This worked well to get the silhouette that I was looking for.

Lighting

I took several photos as the horse and my grandson looked at each other. They were all good photos, but when my grandson went to kiss Chance's nose I quickly snapped away. I did not ask him to do this but was so glad he did. And for me the timing with the tiny amount of light between him and Chance just made the photo for me. This is the only photo from the 20 or so that I took that I kept.

Equipment

I shot this with my Nikon D750 handheld using my everyday lens which is a Nikkor 28-300 mm.

Inspiration

I love silhouettes and the barn aisleway just lends itself to this type of shot. We had been out in the arena in full sun prior to this but the lighting was just to darn harsh. While I was standing in the aisleway and my daughter walked in through that doorway the silhouette idea hit me and I ran with it.

Editing

Cropping and adjusting for contrast to create the silhouette look. Converting it into B&W gave me the ability to mask the background (which had the house in it) and lower the saturation so the house was not an issue. Photoshop is definitely not my strong suit so the B&W conversion helped by allowing me to remain in Lightroom for the editing.

In my camera bag

As I tend to be a minimalist when shooting I typically only carry the camera and lens that I plan to use, an extra battery and sometimes a tripod if I think I will be shooting something that will require a steady mount. Sometimes I regret this decision but it has forced me to become creative to find another way to capture what I didn't expect to see. Sometimes it works and I get a totally different type of photo than I would normally have shot. Sometimes it works, and sometimes it doesn't. :-)

Feedback

Silhouettes are fun and simple to shoot. A darkened hallway or similar with bright light at the opening and a subject in that bright light. In my case I simply had to be prepared for my grandson doing the unexpected move of going to kiss the horse's nose. For me, perfect!
