Location
This photo was taken in one of the canals in Srinagar, in the state of Kashmir in India. I hired a boat and explored the canals. When I came to this particular canopy covered side of it, I waited for a traditional boat to arrive, which is often a colourful one, and soon I was rewarded with this incoming boat into the green zone.Time
This was taken on April 17, 2013, at about 10:29 AM. I started very early that morning. I remember waking up at 5 am and starting rowing the country boat through the canals. I had taken various photos up to this point, but this one is a personal favourite. I was on a boat, so a tripod was not used. However, since I had anchored the boat at that corner of the canal, I could keep the boat still and take this shot.Lighting
The overcast day and the canopy of the trees provided me with a natural filter for this shot, and even though it was taken late in the morning, the lighting was perfect for a hand held shot with a decent depth of field.Equipment
This photo was taken on a Canon 5D with an EF 24-70 mm f/2.8 lens. No other equipment was used.Inspiration
The water bodies and canals in Srinagar have historically remained a self-sustaining eco-system in which people lived, worked, and thrived. I wanted to see how people live, commute, and go about their lives with the canal as the central theme and capture those moments.Editing
Since the natural lighting was good, not much post-processing was required. I edited the raw file in Photoshop, added NIK Color Contrast, and adjusted contrast and vibrance.In my camera bag
As I mostly shoot travel and landscape photos, I carry two wide angle lenses - my old and trusted Canon EF 24-70 mm f/2.8L and the Canon EF 16-35 mm f/4L IS. I love the quality of these ‘L’ lenses from Canon. For the camera body, I had regularly used the Canon EOS 5D since 2006 until last year, when I bought the mirrorless Canon EOS R6 . During my trekking expeditions to the upper Himalayas, I carry the lightweight and mirrorless Sony ILCE-6000 camera with a Sony E PZ 16-50 mm lens - it's not premium but does the job for me in situations where carrying the least amount of weight is the rule.Feedback
Before I took this photo, I had been exploring the canals of Srinagar for the past 4 days with the same routine every day – get up early, start rowing through the canals, notice how the people are going about their lives, and take photos of those moments. I had passed this particular part of the canal on one previous occasion, but it was raining then. So, on this day, I decided to come back again and anchored the boat at the corner where the canal turns and waited for one of these colourful boats to make its way there, which eventually it did. So, familiarise yourself with the environment, location, and subjects, plan ahead of time, and learn to wait.
