Thanks! The tree only blooms for about one week a year, usually around May 20th. It's starting to bud now, so I'll have another crack at photos in about six weeks. I watch the dates because dandelions start flowering at the same time. I have some beehives so once the flowers are out the bees are happy.

Behind The Lens

Location

I have a crabapple tree in my front yard. The tree blooms once a year for about a week, and is absolutely beautiful when in bloom.

Time

I was headed out my car to head to work at about 7:00 am. I saw the soft light filtering through the tree and went back into the house to grab my camera.

Lighting

It was still somewhat early in the morning on a slight overcast day. This softened the light quite a bit, which allowed me to blur the background, but still keep the brightness and colors of the tree in the background.

Equipment

I used a Canon 2000D with a 35mm lens.

Inspiration

I was admiring the beauty of the tree as I only see it like this for one week out of the year at the end of May. As I have bee hives in my yard, I’m frequently on the lookout for bees pollinating the blossoms. I couldn’t resist going back for my camera when I saw how the lighting played off the tree.

Editing

I didn’t need to do a lot of editing on this photo. I cut back on the highlights, lightened the shadows and added about 1/3 of a stop of exposure to brighten the photo.. I increased both the vibrance and saturation slightly (both +8 in Lightroom) to bring out the colors, and added a light vignette to frame the blossoms.

In my camera bag

I have a pretty basic camera with some pretty basic gear. Besides my Canon 2000D,and kit lenses, I always carry a 35mm prime lens, and a 55-300mm zoom lens. I always have a flash and a few different reflectors and diffusers. Due to the bright snowy winters in Wyoming I carry a white and gray card to set a custom white balance. Extra batteries and SD cards are always on hand, as is a variable ND filter and a polarizing filter.

Feedback

As basic as it sounds the only thing I did was keep my eyes open and look for a good composition. While there are hundreds, if not thousands of blossoms, only a few will have a nice background at the right distance to give you the softness I was looking for.
