Starlings nest in natural cavities in trees, in nest boxes but also in buildings. They scan the bottom of meadows and lawns in search of insect larvae, such as the crane fly (lemons). They are still numerous, but are declining rapidly. After the breeding season, starlings gather in large roosts. In the autumn many starlings come to our area from Northern and Central Europe. Dense clouds of thousands of starlings form around the roosts and 'waves' beautifully in the sky.
