Location
I took this photo on my way home from work at the time in my hometown of Bergen op Zoom (Netherlands). I could also say that it is at the intersection of the streets Het Spui, De Dubbelstraat and Noordzijde Haven, at a part that is popularly called 't Stieleke in our town. This name is old dialect (only spoken in my town Bergen op Zoom) and has been given to it in the past because the part there goes up quite steeply (in Dutch 'steil', hence in the dialect; 't Stieleke).Time
It was late in the afternoon of December 11, 2017 when I was getting ready to go home from my work. So it was almost winter. In the meantime it had been snowing heavily for an hour or so, at least, for our standards... it doesn't snow that often in recent years, at least not as much as it does on this specific day.Lighting
Well, what can I say/write about the lighting... As I wrote above, it was a bit late in the afternoon around 5:30 PM on December 11. So it was almost winter and therefore already dark for several hours. But the snowfall and the old street lamps with soft yellow lighting in them gave the whole city a very special atmosphere... a bit of a mysterious atmosphere in fact.Equipment
This photo was hand-held with a simple cell phone, my Samsung S8. Nothing more, nothing less...Inspiration
What was my inspiration? Well, my hometown is a very old town with many smaller streets and old houses and buildings. Fortunately, many of those old houses and buildings have been preserved (the oldest are from around 1300-1350!). If you then walk home from work through the old center of town and you like photography and there is such a great atmosphere such as there was at that time because of the snow... Well, it simply can't be that you won't take photo's! No, on the contrary, there were quite a lot photos taken in fact. What is normally a walk of about half an hour, then automatically became almost two hours!Editing
No post-processing has been done to this photo at all. The quality isn't very good because it was taken with my cell phone (and then also in the dark), so running a post-processing program over it won't really work. In addition, I find that the photo itself has a very special atmosphere, almost the same atmosphere I experienced walking home that afternoon/evening.In my camera bag
When I go out to shoot, I normally have my Sony a7iii with me. And I use a Sony 24-240mm lens with it. Apart from some extra batteries and memory cards, that's all I take with me. Every now and then a tripod, but that rarely happens. But with this photo, that was all at home. It was just a normal working day so it was not the intention to take pictures at all. When it started to snow like this, I was actually quite disappointed that I had left my normal photo equipment at home. Fortunately, my cell phone offered a little help.Feedback
A tip to capture something like this?... Well, many will say that you should always have your photo equipment with you. And actually they are quite right. But if you just have to go to your day job, you may not do this often. Especially not if you go to work on foot like I did at the time and a photo bag with all kinds of stuff next to your regular bag with stuff for work is not so handy. What is useful is to have a mobile phone with you. Make sure that your battery is always fully charged when you go to work from home. But also when you go home afterwards! That afternoon/evening I walked around for more than one and a half hours and in the cold that was there and taking quite a lot of pictures (one spot was EVEN more beautiful than the other spot in the old town!), your battery runs out empty much faster!!!
