This is a picture I took with my mobile phone a few months ago in a nature reserve not that far away from my hometown. It's called Yerseke Moer and you can find it nearby the small town of Yerseke (the Netherlands).

A storm was building up fast and it did not took long before... well I think you can guess looking at the picture what happened.

When I looked at the picture after I made it, to my surprise there was an insect just passing my lens when I took the photo... maybe you can see it?

Behind The Lens

Location

I took this photo with my mobile phone (a Samsung S10) at a nature reserve about half an hour from where I live. It is called 'Yerseke Moer' and is located in the province of Zeeland near the town of Yerseke (the Netherlands).

Time

It was mid-afternoon, late April 2021. It looked like it was going to be a beautiful stormy day, and so for me and my brother a reason to get out and try to take some pictures again. This time it was not a ride to the coast, but just in the polders near our hometown of Bergen op Zoom.

Lighting

As mentioned above, it was a stormy day with heavy clouds that raced across the sky. Every now and then the sun broke through these clouds. With this photo I waited a while until this was indeed the case and the sun cast a light streak over part of the polder. To accentuate the effect even more, I did edit this photo a bit with the help of the PixLR program.

Equipment

This photo was taken with my mobile phone, a Samsung S10. Normally I always have my real camera with me (a Sony a7iii), but sometimes my brother and I just go out and I don't bother to take that camera with me.

Inspiration

I often go out with my brother. We just get in the car and drive around for a while. Sometimes a few hours in the area, but it also happens that we are away for a whole day and then end up at the French coast, in the Belgian Ardennes or just in Germany at the river Ahr. Luckily this is all doable in one day from where we live. Along the way we chat a lot and are always inspired by something to take pictures of. Sometimes that can be a dilapidated building, or else old cars. Other times it's just a beautiful natural area... actually it often goes in all directions. In this case, the weather forecast was that it could be 'heavy', so that was the reason for us to stay in our own area and drive through the polders for a change.

Editing

In fact, I do edit most of my photos in one way or another. Sometimes it's just a bit of sliding on the white balance, but sometimes it's way more to create a certain atmosphere in the photo. I use the free program PixLR for this. Especially with photo's taken with my cell phone I use this program a lot. In this specific photo I increased the overall darkness a bit and then picked up the light a bit more in the places where the sunlight fell on the ground. I think with this I created a more dramatic feel to the photo.

In my camera bag

I don't really have that much with me. In my bag you can find a Sony a7iii with a Sony 24-240mm lens (both from 2018). That's where I take all my photos with. Of course I always have an extra battery and memory cards with me. Every now and then I also take a tripod with me, but that doesn't happen often. This is a Vanguard from 1990, but still works like the best. But as mentioned a few times above... I also often take pictures with my Samsung S10 (from 2019) mobile phone.

Feedback

Just some advice? Buy a car and drive around from time to time!... Just kidding! No, all kidding aside... Just go out every now and then. Get in a car, get on a bike, or just go for a walk. This way you sometimes come to the most surprising places, with always something beautiful or interesting to photograph. Of course you can do some more research beforehand to find out what you can find where. Is there a nice old cemetery somewhere nearby for example? Or maybe old fortifications? Or do you know of a car museum somewhere? Or (in the case of my photo) do you know a beautiful nature reserve? In addition, it might be useful to keep an eye on the weather if you want to take beautiful nature photos. Because with some more extreme weather, the photos often become much, much more interesting! Good Luck!!!
