This woodpecker is known for the unusual habit of squirreling away large quantities of acorns in "granary" trees. These granaries are a lot of work for the woodpecker family as it must be defended from other birds and the acorns need to be turned frequently for them to dry properly. and then moved as they shrink.

Thank you so much!! We were watching them defend and then care for their loot... they would turn them as they were drying and sometimes move them entirely to a different spot in the tree. Was amazing to watch.
