Location
This photo was take on the slopes of Mauna Kea Volcano. The tree in the foreground is a native Mamane tree, which are under assault from feral goats and sheep that have been brought to the Island. Large trees of this size are increasingly rare.Time
This image was taken around 11pmLighting
The lighting on the tree was made with a very fast swipe of led light in order to illustrate the details of the tree and the grasses below the tree. I tried to increase the drama of the image but also make sure the incredible angle of the Milky Way was not overwhelmed by the light on the tree and ground.Equipment
I used a Nikon D850, with a Nikon 14-25 wide angle lens and Really Right Stuff tripod with ball head.Inspiration
I wanted to have the Milky Way positioned to point directly to the tree as I wanted the connection from our world to the rest of the universe to be visceral.Editing
I use various processing software on my work, depending on the need of the scene. This can sometimes include a raw processor, HDR and de-noising software. In my camera bag
The equipment is have depends on the type of photography I plan to take. I have a wide range of lenses, including long telephotos, macro and wide angle lenses. I have both prime lenses and zoom lenses.Feedback
Scout areas in advance, if possible. Think about what you plan to capture and, if posible, how you can make the composition be dramatic, soft or other, depending on your style and the mood you wish to create. Any long exposures will require a sturdy tri-pod, and either a cable release or use of delayed timer. Be ready to be spontaneous if sometime occurs that you cannot plan for.
