Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken in Summer, New Zealand, at the local Victoria Esplanade Gardens which is a large area of gardens including flower beds, bush walks, river walks and play grounds where I go to find peace and to take photographs.

Time

I took a shot of these beautiful orange coneflowers at 1.02pm in the early afternoon as I walked through the flower beds by the glass tropical conservatory.

Lighting

The sun had slipped behind some clouds so a softer effect was achieved. I liked the way the flowers in the foreground stood out against the blurred background.

Equipment

This photo was shot with a Nikon Coolpix P950 hand held camera. 250mm F6/3 1/320 sec ISO 100

Inspiration

I simply love the color and shape of these coneflowers and they always draw my eye when they are blooming. They are a great attraction for the bees and butterflies and make a bright and colorful show. The flowers are like tiny ballerinas with their skirts flapping as they dance in the gentle wind. I particularly liked the composition with these four main flowers as the focus.

Editing

No post-processing on this particular shot. I liked it as it was taken.

In my camera bag

I always have two cameras with me, this Nikon Coolpix P950 and my smaller Canon PowerShot SX60 HS. I carry these cameras as they are lighter and I have difficulty lifting heavier cameras and lenses. I like the zoom features on both, the macro and of course my favorite feature on the Nikon, Bird setting. I take many bird photos and paint from these images. I also have attached to one of these cameras my monopod for easy setting up, dropping and locking. Also in the bag are spare batteries and SIM card for each. I detest finding that great shot and then the camera running out of battery at that exact time. Learned that lesson the hard way. Now always carry spares.

Feedback

I would always say if you like flower and insect photography, nature generally, look close to home, put out seeds and nectar for the birds and enjoy them visiting your garden. Plant flowers that attract birds and insects and wait for the opportunities that arise. I spend a great deal of time walking through the Victoria Esplanade Gardens, my home away from home. I always take a camera with me to capture the native birds or particular flower and as the seasons change enjoy the colors of the leaves and trees overhead. Photographic opportunities always present as you walk along the various paths enjoying the peace and tranquility of being out and about in nature. For this shot I simply took time to photograph an area of the garden and flowers that appealed to me.
