Behind The Lens

Location

The photo was taken at Silver Lake near the Brighton Ski Resort up Big Cottonwood Canyon, Utah.

Time

The photo was taken at 0950 MST on December 21, 2017.

Lighting

The lighting is natural light. The day was overcast. The newly fallen snow made a good reflector.

Equipment

Nikon D850. ISO 64 1/50 sec AF-S Nikkor 28-300mm f/3.5-5.6 G ED VR at 28mm, f/5.0 Hand held

Inspiration

After a visit to my cardiologist, I wanted the calming influence of nature. I've visited Silver Lake many times and knew I would find calm there. As I walked off the path a bit, I found this scene. The feeling was calming, just what I was looking for.

Editing

The RAW file was processed with DxO. Editing was done with Corel Paint Shop Pro. I edited a log and some other distracting elements from the foreground. There was a brown branch in a tree on the left. I cloned green branches in its place.

In my camera bag

D850, 28-300mm, 70-200mm f/2.8, 24-70mm f/2.8, and 85mm f/1.4 lenses. Extra batteries, memory cards, lens cloth and wipes, ND filter, battery charger, and a water bottle kept in a pocket on the side of the camera bag. If traveling, I also bring a laptop and external hard drive to save files for later.

Feedback

Go with a purpose in mind. Revisit familiar places with the idea of seeing them fresh. Don't rush. Let inspiration come to you at its own pace. Enjoy the process. Allow what you are feeling to permeate your work. This will allow others to experience those feelings too.
