Behind The Lens

Location

For this session, I met with dutch volleyball player Esmee Priem on the beach in The Hague, The Netherlands.

Time

It was a not so warm summer night...

Lighting

The main light source was placed camera-left, two compact flashes were used as effect light behind her.

Equipment

There was no ambient light worth mentioning, all light comes from various flashes. If I remember right, I used two Jinbei HD600 and four compact flashes Godox TT600. I also used a Nikon D800 with a Tamron 70-200mm as well as a radiotrigger

Inspiration

I liked the idea of showing Esmee's athletic body in her sport, adding some action and drama. Sand is a wonderful tool to emphasise movement

Editing

In post, I tweaked exposure and contrast, darkened the sand and cropped to a square format.

In my camera bag

It really depends on the shoot, but I love to work with my Nikon D800, often with a Tamron 70-200mm. I also often carry a 14mm lens, radiotrigger, flashes (such as Godox TT600), extra batteries, model releases.

Feedback

Focusing was a challenge. It was too dark for the focus to work, so I pre-focused on the distance where she would be in mid-air, which worked most of the time. Make sure your model does not get cold and have fun.
