Behind The Lens

Location

This photograph was taken At Ryoanji Temple in Kyoto. The temple is famous for its rock garden and so this was somewhere I had wanted to visit for a long time. While there I noticed other places which were also worth photographing, and this doorway was one such place, at least for me.

Time

I had often heard that there are always very many people visiting Ryoanji Temple, as so I decided to arrive early in the morning to avoid any crowds. This was taken between 9:30-10:00 a.m. There were very few people there when I visited the temple, due in part because it was early in the morning, but also because of fewer people going sightseeing because of COVID-19.

Lighting

I enjoy photographing early in the morning or in the early evening because the natural light is most beautiful then. I think I was lucky that there is detail in the shadows under the roof of the doorway, and that the light past the doorway was top lighting which made the leaves of the trees “glow.”

Equipment

This was taken with my iPhone SE, so everything was automatic. I almost always haven’t iPhone in my pocket, just in case something catches my eye.

Inspiration

The doorway and the path in the middle were two things that I noticed, and then I also noticed the diagonal light leading to the doorway, which just happened to lead to the path in the middle of the photograph. It made me think of how we all have paths to follow, though some may lead to dead ends.

Editing

No post processing was done except for cropping the photograph on theft and right sides to make the composition better.

In my camera bag

I usually travel light, with my Nikon D800 DSLR with the Nikon 28-300 AF-S VR lens. It’s a bit heavy. This combination is quite versatile and takes care of most of my photographing needs. And I almost always have my iPhone in my pocket as well.

Feedback

Think of the time of day and the lighting. Bracket your shots, and now that everything is digital, check the photos immediately after shoot to check on the exposure, composition and if the photograph “feels right.” Also, photograph from multiple angles, since some of the other photographs may be better. Have fun photographing!
