Behind The Lens
Location
This was taken in our kitchen. The avocado pit has been growing in a cup of water on our counter for a couple of months.Time
It was late afternoon, but most of the light in the shot was from a flashlight behind the leaf.Lighting
I used a simple lighting setup, cloudy daylight through the kitchen window and a LED flashlight from behind the leaf to bring out the vein structure.Equipment
I shot this with a Sony A3000 with the kit lens, I picked up at a thrift store for less than $100. I lit the back of the leaf with a handheld flashlight.Inspiration
The macro canyon-like surface of the leaf was interesting to me, and I thought lighting it from underneath would highlight those lines.Editing
I don't like to do too much to an image if I can help it. I guess you could say I am quite old school in that way. We did not have a lot of money growing up, so trying to get it right in the camera is how I have always approached photography. I will however usually adjust for brightness and contrast. In my camera bag
I really don't keep a camera bag ready, since my photography interests change from day to day. For example, if I shoot something macro, then I have the Minolta extension bellows (another thrift store find) setup on the Sony A3000. For more general things, it might be the Canon XS1 or the 6D.Feedback
Use the equipment that you have to make images. You don't have to go out and get the most expensive camera or have a professional studio to produce interesting images that people will like.
