Behind The Lens

Location

Like many pet photos, you have to take them when and where you can. Case in point, my cat decided to take a nap in the sun on top of the washing machine, making it easier to get to his eye level.

Time

The laundry room is in the basement and has a south facing window. This was shot at about 2pm with the sun light coming in the widow, which gave a nice back light to his face.

Lighting

This is a great example of using one light source to illuminate your subject. The sun light creates a nice rim light and it also reflects off of the washer lid into his face and creates the catch light in his eyes.

Equipment

Shot with a Canon EOS XSi with 55mm at f/8. No flash or tripod since I did not want to disturb his nap.

Inspiration

I really liked the sun light shining on him, but I also liked the look on his face.

Editing

I started in photography when I was a kid. I used black and white 127 film in a basic camera and did not have much editing I could do without an enlarger. So I got in the habit to try to get most shots in camera. For this photograph I did crop in to eleminate some of the background distractions and a little adjustment to contrast and brightness.

In my camera bag

A cameraI and a lens. I really don't have one specific setup for my camera bag. But lately I have used a lot of the classic manual lenses with the lens mount adapters for micro 4/3 and the Sony Emount cameras. I like the look and also the control manual lenses give you.

Feedback

The best tip I can give for getting a good photo of a pet is to get down to there eye level. The other thing to remember is patience, many times they don't want to sit still in that perfectly lit spot you have found, so you have to come back to it.
